【JALAC Institute Policy Brief】 This report has been prepared by Mikio Kuwayama, Managing Director of the Japan Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (JALAC) and Senior Analyst of JALAC’s Institute for Latin American and the Caribbean Studies (ILAC), for the Brazil-Japan-US Virtual Meeting Series “The Free and Open International Order: Brazil-Japan-US Collaboration in a New Political Climate”, in February and March 2021. The series of online conferences were cohosted by JALAC, the Inter-American Dialogue (IAD), and the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). The views expressed in this report are of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of JALAC. This report has not undergone formal editing.

This brief report discusses the RCEP’s relevance to President Biden’s diplomacy toward the Asia-Pacific region and the economic significance of RCEP from a Latin American perspective (its impact on trade relations with the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur). The report concludes with a note on how Japan can enhance trade ties between Latin America and Asia-Pacific, with CPTPP and RCEP as a possible policy anchor.
