Abstract
The Institute for Latin American and the Caribbean Studies (ILAC), recently created JALAC’s research institute, organized a conference “Latin American regional integration at a crossroads? : the Pacific Alliance and the Mercosur”, in collaboration with the Latin America- Asia Pacific Observatory, at the Inter-American Development Bank Asia Office (IADB), March 12, 2015. The Observatory is a joint initiative of the ALADI, CAF and ECLAC. At the seminar, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi, Coordinator of the Observatory, presented his views on the seemingly polarizing Latin American regional integration process between the Pacific Alliance and the Mercosur. At the event a handout of a selected number of PPT slides was distributed among the audience. At this website, we provide the entire PPT presentation, both English (the presentation was made in English) and Spanish versions, which we hope are of great interest to all JALAC members.
At the seminar, after reviewing separately the evolution of Mercosur and the birth process of the Pacific Alliance as a regional integration scheme, and assessing the achievements made and failures and difficulties encountered by Mercosur over the years, Dr. Bartesaghi explored routes of possible convergence between the two years ahead. Contrary to what can be expected, his assessment on Mercosur is quite positive ―Mercosur will never disappear―, while that for the Alliance is rather skeptical (“wait and see”), given that the latter is just recently founded.
