Abstract
JALAC was honored to have the Honorable Ambassador of Peru to Japan, Mr. Elard Escala, as a guest speaker at the conference,“Perú hoy y su perspectiva” (“Peru today and its future”), held at the Convection Hall of Hibiya Library, April 21, 2015. This event was attended by more than 90 participants. JALAC is pleased to share the PPT presentation, prepared in English.
During the conference, after briefing on the features of three different geographic regions (the coastal, the mountain, and the Amazon jungle) and the long Japan–Peru friendship, the Ambassador reviewed the current state of the Peruvian economy, present trade relations with Japan and Asia, the evolution of Japan-Peru EPA, and thriving agricultural products exports in recent years, using statistical information on each topic. In addition, he discussed the importance of the Pacific Alliance (Peru is a founding member) which has been the driving force of Latin American economy. He also talked about a joint scheme to share embassy and trade promotion agency spaces among Alliance member countries. During a lively “questions and answers” session, the Ambassador took a pain to respond to all the questions, including the challenges that Peru has ahead, such as infrastructure building and environmental concerns in natural resource development, the adhesion process of Costa Rica and Panama to the Alliance, and the role of the Andean Community in today’s Latin American regional integration.
