Abstract
A summary report, “Colombia en los Escenarios de Integración en Asia Pacífico”, by Adriana Roldán Pérez, Associate Professor at the Centro de Estudios Asia-Pacifico, Universidad EAFIT, Medellin, Colombia, was initially published in Japanese in the JALAC’ quarterly journal, Latin America jihou, Spring 2015 (Number, 1410). This Jihou focuses on Colombia, and contains six articles on different aspects on Colombia, written by experts of different fields. The Roldan’s paper takes a close look at Colombia’s trade and investment relations with Asia-Pacific and offers policy options available to strengthen those relations, from a proper Colombian viewpoint. At this website, we provide the unabridged, complete version of the paper, in its original language Spanish, coauthored by Dr. Mikio Kuwayama, Managing Director of the JALAC.
Colombia, one of the four founding members of the Pacific Alliance, is increasingly recognizing the need to strengthen economic and trade relations with the Asia-Pacific region, which has been the engine of the world economy and international trade in recent decades. But different from Chile, Mexico and Peru, Colombia is not a member of APEC. Besides, TPP’s membership at present is opened only to APEC members, reason for which Colombia’s joining TPP is very unlikely in the short-term. This paper analyzes policy options available to Colombia, under this limited circumstance.
