JALAC was honored to have as Guest Speaker, Honorable Ambassador of the
Republic of Chile to Japan, Mr. Patricio Torres, at the conference
entitled, “Chile Today: Political and Economic Situation”, held at the
Foreign Press Center, July 9th 2015. The event was a great success,
attended by more than 90 people. JALAC has decided to reproduce the
comprehensive PPT Presentation in its entirety on the English Home Page,
hoping that it will be of interest and use for a wider JALAC community. *
*During his presentation, the ambassador briefed the audience on Chile’s
political, economic, and social accomplishments of recent years, referring
to political stability, open market-economy, international competitiveness
(the highest in the Latin American region), always backed by updated
statistics. Ambassador Torres put emphasis on Chile’s basic government
agenda 2014-2018, which includes a number of ambitious reforms (tax,
educational, constitutional and labor, among others). He also elaborated on
Chile’s recent foreign trade and investment trends and opportunities in
infrastructure, renewable energy and foods. Later, Ambassador touched on
the foreign policy objectives, emphasizing the progress of the Pacific
Alliance, of which Chile is a founding member. During a lively Q&A session,
the Ambassador kindly responded to all the questions from the floor: the
significance of Chile as a “Gateway” of South America, the recent
modification of foreign investment regulations, and Japan-Chile cooperation
possibilities in science and technology.
