“How have the Latin American Area Studies in Japan evolved over the years?” Dr. Takahiro Miyachi, Associate Professor of Graduate School of Global Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, presented the paper, entitled “Research for What? Development and Diversification of Latin American Area Studies in Japan” , at the 34th International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), held in New York City, USA, May 27-30, 2016.

Established in 1966, the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) is the largest professional Association in the world for individual researchers and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America. It organizes international congress inside and outside the United States, annually or every eighteen months. The 2016 congress coincided with the 50th anniversary of the organization. According to its 2016 program, the Association currently has over 12,000 members, nearly half of whom reside in the Latin America and Caribbean region. More than 5400 papers were submitted to the New York congress for consideration. The next International Congress will be held in Lima, Peru, April 29 – May 1, 2017.
