Mr. Shigeaki Ueki was born in Brazil in 1935 as Nisei. Graduated from the Department of Law,Sao Paulo Catholic University. He was the Minister of Mining and Energy from 1974 to 1978 and the President of Petrobras, the National Oil Company from 1979 to 1984. Since then, he has been active as entrepreneur, investor and business consultant. He had been travelling around the world just before the COVID-19 epidemic spread.
Questions to Mr. Ueki are, among others,
1) what the COVID-19 brought to LAC countries?,
2) what will be foreseen in LAC countries after the COVID-19 pandemic?,
3) how Japan will be able to deepen the relationship with LAC countries in the coming near future?
His answers are:
1) COVID-19 highlights the chronic political, social and economic problems of LAC countries.
2) Presidential election of the United States makes the forecast for the near future difficult, but Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Argentine will recover quicker compared to other countries because of their more diversified economy, and 3) Japan should look for new business opportunity in LAC region like what European and the US business have been acting. He expects that the Japanese new government strives to strengthen the relationship with LAC from the global point of view.
