Alberto Salas is a Mining entrepreneur, earned MBA of Civil engineer at Universidad de Chile. He is currently the Chairman of SQM S.A., No.1 producer of lithium and iodine in the world.
Former President of Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC) and Past President of the National Mining Society of Chile (Sonami). He is very well-known figure not only in Chile, but also in the Latin American mining circle. He was Director of National Mining Company (ENAMI) (1996-2015), National Petroleum Company (ENAP) (2017-2018), and currently is Director of Cía. Minera del Pacifico S. A. (CAP Mineria), among others. Mr. Salas is Former Member of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC)(2016-2018)

Mr.Alberto Salas was interviewed in respect to the influence of Covid-19 in Chile and Latin America, and the plebiscite for a new constitution. Mr.Salas positively evaluated that the Chilean authorities has taken measures in a professional manner to prevent from the medical collapse, though the impact of Covid-19 is really serious.
Among the main industrial sectors, the mining and agroindustry have been affected relatively lesser than the tourism and service industries. In general, he sees the Chile’s economic recovery to be faster than the other LAC countries. He pointed out that, due to the restriction of the movement and the activities gathering the crowd, the digitalization has been developed very rapidly.
It has prompted the change of the citizens’ lifestyle, enabling education, labor, purchasing activity, among others in remote. With respect to the plebiscite, its argument was raised unfortunately as a way to resolve the social dissatisfaction arising from the social turbulence, though he considers that a new constitution will properly stipulate a provision of the social rights with the due consideration for the private property.
